Dish racks play a critical role in maintaining the order in the kitchen, and making the right choice of material can go a long way in improving the overall strength. As two common materials, stainless steel and aluminum are preferred for their anti rust tendencies. However, it is also important to know how these materials interact over time and what care procedures are necessary for achieving their purpose and visual appeal.
Dish Racks Made of Stainless Steel and Their Resistance to Rusting
Corrosion, for stainless steel, is never an issue. Thanks to the chromium content, a thin layer of chromium oxide forms and coats the surface, preventing moisture and oxygen from making contact. Sadly, that is not the case for all stainless steels. The 304 stainless steel grade is robust enough to withstand rust and works best for dish racks that are regularly soaked with water.
While stainless steel stands the test of time well, it is not invincible. After prolonged exposure to tough chemicals or continuous water stains, it may rust or get discoloration on the surface. Dish racks should be dried after use to ensure their anti-rust properties remain intact. Additionally, they can also be wiped clean with water and soap from time to time. Aluminum Dish Racks and Their Oxidation Properties
Aluminum is another light weight and rust-free material that is used for dish racks quite often. Contrary to steel which has iron content and thus rusts, aluminum has no iron and therefore also rusts. Rather it forms an oxidation layer which prevents the layer from rusting. This makes aluminum dish racks very suitable for wet places like kitchens.
Despite its rust and oxidation properties, aluminum does tend to become cloudy after a period with exposure to hard water or acid. To make sure the surface is not getting too dull, vinegar or lemon with water may be used to remove stains and enhance the surface’s natural appearance. Just like stainless steel, aluminum racks need to be sure they get dried so their appearance is not affected.
Long-Term Care for Rust Prevention
Both stainless steel as well as aluminum dish racks are resistant to rust but do not wear out completely. However, certain practices need to be followed to ensure they don’t wear or rust over time:
Dry completely: Use a clean and dry cloth to dry the dish rack after using it to avoid marks left by water.
Don’t use abrasives: In order to avoid damaging the surface finishing, soft sponges and mild detergents need to be used.
Wipe several times: To avoid remaining minerals, dirty spots, and oxidation both materials must be wiped and cleaned from time to time.
Do not exposure chemicals: Shelves must be protected from chemicals like bleach that may damage the layers on the rack.
As long as they are maintained well enough, both Stainless Steel Dish Racks and aluminum dish racks are fairly decent options for the prevention of rust. For stainless steel, high-grade stainless steel can withstand longer with greater durability and corrosion. With aluminum, the finish has a lower chance of corrosion but the surface can easily undergo oxidation. With a bit of effort, both the dish racks provide solutions for the organization of the kitchen, making it clean and clutter-free for several years.
